India’s $35 Android tablet reportedly on track for January launch
Last Updated on Wednesday, 8 September 2010 05:57 Written by Donald Melanson Wednesday, 8 September 2010 05:57
It seemed like a bit of a stretch from the beginning, but it looks like India’s $35 Android tablet is intent on proving the skeptics wrong — the Indian government has just announced that it’s awarded the manufacturing contract to HCL Technologies (makers of the once world’s cheapest laptop ), and that the first batch of tablets are slated to be available by January 10th. That initial run will reportedly only include the 7-inch model that we’ve been seeing all along, but there’s also apparently 5-inch and 9-inch versions planned for launch at a later date. We also presume that the tablet is still hanging onto that $35 price tag (for university students, at least), but that key detail is curiously absent from this latest announcement. MSI ships Core i5-packin’ P600 and S6000 laptops to egomaniacal cube dwellers
Last Updated on Thursday, 5 August 2010 12:16 Written by Darren Murph Thursday, 5 August 2010 12:16
Call ‘em suitable for business travelers (or whatever this guy is), or just call ‘em classy — either way, MSI has a new pair of 15.6-incher headed to North America. The P600 and S6000 don’t differ much; by and large, the only thing keeping them from merging into one is the smaller battery (and thus, lower weight) of the S6000. Both units boast Intel’s Core i5-450M processor, integrated GMA HD graphics, 4GB of DDR3 memory, a 1,366 x 768 resolution panel, 3-in-1 card reader, 500GB hard drive, 802.11b/g/n WiFi, stereo speakers, HDMI / VGA outputs, a pair of USB 2.0 ports and an eSATA / USB combo jack. They’re both rocking Windows 7 Home Premium (64-bit) under the hood, with the S6000 and its 4-cell battery starting at $799.99 while the 8-cell’d P600 goes for $829.99 and up.

Home audio shocker! Onkyo aims new compact systems at ‘audiophiles’
Last Updated on Friday, 23 July 2010 12:17 Written by Joseph L. Flatley Friday, 23 July 2010 12:17
Onkyo , known in these parts for everything from digiframes to a rather wild selection of PCs, has announced a set of compact audio systems aimed at the audiophile (though to be fair, Onkyo’s definition of “audiophile” might be different than our own). For the well-heeled consumer, the CS-1045DAB (pictured after the break) sports 70W (x2) output, three analog and both optical and coaxial SPDIF inputs, a front-mounted USB port, VLSC Vector Linear Shaping Circuit tech, and a 24-bit Burr-Brown DAC. Score! Available at the end of August for £600 ($925) or bundled with a pair of D-145 speakers for £700 ($1,080). If your budget’s a little tighter (and we can’t blame you if it is) the CS-545UK (pictured above) is a cute little guy that features a digital amp, 2 x 50W output, MP3 compatible, tray-loaded CD player (remember those?), both an iPod dock and USB input, video out (presumably composite) and sub woofer out. Ships with a pair of D-045 2-way bass reflex speakers for £349 ($537) or without for £249. Look for it in September, kids! Continue reading Home audio shocker! Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 has been rooted, all is right with the world
Last Updated on Saturday, 10 July 2010 10:31 Written by Tim Stevens Saturday, 10 July 2010 10:31
Sony Ericsson’s Xperia X10 has been out and about for some time, facing off against the competition and predictably getting ripped to shreds . Now it has reached the next natural step of its evolution: receiving the root treatment by a bloke at xda-developers . User Bin4ry over there has posted step-by-step instructions on how to locate your device ID, re-flash your phone, and then enable superuser abilities.

Alleged Russian spies used WiFi and pre-paid cellphones, got caught anyways
Last Updated on Monday, 5 July 2010 03:29 Written by Joseph L. Flatley Monday, 5 July 2010 03:29
Are the new crop of Russian spies nerds like us? We doubt it (we probably have more in common with Lil Wayne than a certain “Anna Chapman,” if that is her real name). How do they do their dirty work, then? Apparently their kit is mostly off-the-shelf: including laptops and flash memory cards. According to the FBI, two of the recently accused perps would meet at a coffee shop in Manhattan every Wednesday, where one would sit inside, while they other passed by in a van. When in range, they would connect over WiFi and transfer encrypted communications over their network. (The FBI was able to sniff this out using commercial software. Had they used ultra-wideband radio, however, the investigator’s task would probably have been all but impossible).

Engadget HD Podcast 200 – 06.29.2010
Last Updated on Tuesday, 29 June 2010 12:22 Written by Trent Wolbe Tuesday, 29 June 2010 12:22
Yes, that is right sir, we have recorded our 200th episode. It’s been a long road, four years since our first show and while only one host has made it through every episode — but one that is — we’ve had a number of great hosts and guests along the way. In fact we’ve had more guests than we can count and four hosts that have passed the baton, so we figured we’d take a stroll down memory lane with a few like Kevin Tofel who was one of the first hosts, and Ryan Block who was instrumental behind the scenes and even made it on a few shows. Of course we couldn’t do a proper number 200 without Steven Kim, co-host of over 100 shows. Last but not least, we looked forward to the next 200 with the one and only Joshua Topolsky. So while we didn’t talk about any current HD news (that episode will come later this week) each of the guests had plenty to say about the show and HD in general — almost 2 hours worth in fact. It has been a fun trip and we hope you continue to enjoy it with us. Thanks to every one of you who has been a part of the ride.
