Data: The Future of the Internet Looks Highly Mobile
Last Updated on Friday, 17 July 2009 12:37 Written by Stacey Higginbotham Friday, 17 July 2009 12:37
With every day that passes we become more convinced that the Internet in our hands aka on our mobile devices is going to define network usage and innovation. According to some estimates, the consumption of data on mobiles will near an exabyte by the end of 2009. In less than four years almost three-quarters of the population will have access to mobile broadband, according to data released today by analyst firm Telegeography . The firm predicts that by the end of 2013 the addressable market for 3G and 4G cellular services will have grown to over 4.5 billion potential subscribers — or about 71 percent of all wireless subscribers. And as I’ve noted , the mobile Internet platform is a greenfield opportunity for innovators. We plan to discuss many of those opportunities at our Mobilize 09 conference on Sept. 10 in San Francisco . (related research from GigaOM Pro: Will Google Lead the Way in Mobile App Innovation?

Sam Sethi Talks About the TechCrunch Lawsuit
Last Updated on Friday, 3 July 2009 05:42 Written by Thord Daniel Hedengren Friday, 3 July 2009 05:42
Earlier this week the news that Sam Sethi is suing TechCrunch hit, and as was expected Michael Arrington posted the legal documents , just as he has done before. The responses to the law firm’s letter to TechCrunch and Arrington have also been reposted , so if you want to dig into what has been said thus far, this is the only place I know of. The TechCrunch stance is obvious, of course: Needless to say, we think these claims have no merit, otherwise we would not have written the posts in the first place, or would have retracted. I did an email interview with Sethi, after he got in touch with me and wanted me to correct or retract the news story (which I didn’t do, obviously). I figured an interview would be the best way to get Sethi’s side of the story. The interview spanned a couple of days, and was made via email. Why have you decided to sue TechCrunch?

The Twitter Show That Wasn’t
Last Updated on Tuesday, 26 May 2009 05:30 Written by Thord Daniel Hedengren Tuesday, 26 May 2009 05:30
Variety reports that Twitter is doing a TV show: The San Francisco-based web phenom has partnered with Reveille and Brillstein Entertainment to develop an unscripted TV skein described as “putting ordinary people on the trail of celebrities in a revolutionary competitive format.” Naturally, that set the blogosphere abuzz with rumors of at Twitter show, reactions and whatnot. However, it turns out that the Variety report wasn’t all that it seemed to be. A post on the Twitter Blog goes on about the openness of Twitter, how various TV networks are utilizing it, and more. However, Biz Stone sets it all straight as well: There is no Twitter show. That doesn’t mean that they don’t have visions though. Obviously you need to believe in your product and its impact, and Twitter has indeed had a massive impact to date, but isn’t this taking it a bit far

In the last article in this new series called Nothing to Blog About , I asked you to go back to your roots , in a sense, to start over and find that “lovin’ feeling” you’ve lost about your blog subject matter to re-energize your creative blogging spirit. What happens if you can’t find it? What happens if you’ve really lost that lovin’ feeling? Are You Blogging What You Should Really Be Blogging? In the early years of Lorelle on WordPress , I thought I should be writing only about WordPress

Is It Time for Ericsson to Ditch Its Sony Partnership?
Last Updated on Tuesday, 19 May 2009 12:40 Written by Stacey Higginbotham Tuesday, 19 May 2009 12:40
Sony CFO Nobuyuki Oneda said today that the joint handset manufacturing effort between Sony and Ericsson will need to raise at least 100 million euros ($135 million) this year, according to the Nikkei English News. This prompted ratings agency S&P to issue a note saying that the telecommunications equipment vendor should sell its stake in its cell phone partnership with Sony: We view this capital need as unsurprising given the weak recent results from SEMC and our forecast for further losses. We think the strategic value of SEMC to ERIC is minimal and believe a resolution requiring a cash infusion would be viewed negatively by ERIC investors. Unfortunately, the note also explains that with the economy being what it is at the moment, and given the lackluster performance of Sony Ericsson handets , such a sale wouldn’t generate much. The partnership between Sony and Ericsson has been a rocky one. Ericsson makes the modules for Sony handsets and other devices. In August, Sony CEO Howard Stringer told a German paper he was unhappy with how things were going.
